Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
Matthew 5:8

The Christian life is not about being successful or desirable according to worldly standards.

Rather, the Christian life is aimed at the vision and glory of God – a secret, spiritual communion with the source of all life. We approach this communion through a life of regular prayer, study, participation in the sacramental life of the Church, the fostering of Christian virtue, and face-to-face relationship with others who walk the way of sanctity.

Drawing on the support and guidance of others is necessary in order to deepen and test the spiritual life. The sign of Christian salvation is incorporation into the household of God, the Church. At the same time, the Christian life requires us to come apart from the routines of a confused world into a place of simplicity and clarity, a desert place. This combination of solitude and communion are what characterize a Christian spiritual retreat at Cloud-Bearing Mountain Christian Retreat and Training Center.

The silent prayer retreat comprises the heart of our programming, where participants are immersed in the practice of contemplative prayer. Contemplative prayer, or hesychia (silence, stillness), is a disciplined way of working with the body, the will, the emotions, and the intellect. Hesychia brings peace, opens us to truth, and helps us to trustingly yield our lives to the transfiguring grace of God.

Situated on the banks of the babbling Mountain Brook on 12 bucolic acres in New York’s northwestern Catskill Mountains, our peaceful grounds provide the perfect setting for this most important work. Cloud-Bearing Mountain is both a private and group Christian spiritual retreat center.

I am so happy that I was able to participate in the retreat as it has had great impact on me so in many ways.

- E.R.

Thank you again for opening your home, making yourself available, and guiding us through an insightful weekend of contemplation, prayer, and stillness. It was a wonderful experience.

- D.A.

Having tasted the practice of contemplative prayer at Mons Nubifer Sanctus, I can honestly say that my spiritual life will never be the same.

- J.R.

Thank you so much for introducing me to contemplative prayer and a more quiet lifestyle. I so appreciated the way you and Maureen welcomed me into your home and invited me to be part of your life. I have continued the practice most days and found a few ways to incorporate quiet work also. Know that God has used this to infuse more of His peace into my life. Thanks for your willingness to lead and inspire me–by example and instruction–in this direction.

- J.T.

“Thank you, Fr. James. It was a refreshing and inspiring day for us.”

- M.H.

I just wanted to thank you again for the retreat.  It was a very positive experience which I am certain will continue to bring growth – in fact, it is not an exaggeration to say that it was life changing.  I am so grateful to have had the opportunity and I will recommend this to Christian friends of mine as well.
