In former times, God, who is without form or body, could never be depicted. But now when God is seen in the flesh conversing with men, I make an image of the God whom I see. I do not worship matter; I worship the Creator of matter who became matter for my sake. John of Damascus (c. 675–749 A.D.)
Since nearly the beginning, icons have been an integral feature of catholic Christian practice. They are not only used for teaching and didactic purposes, but play an essential role in the public liturgical life of the Church, as well as in personal piety. Despite the growing interest in icons throughout various Christian sects, many people do not fully comprehend the fullness of the theology behind the use of icons, or their role in Christian worship. This program will fill in some of these blanks, and dispel erroneous ideas and practices regarding images and their use in prayer. Participants have the option to attend this program in person or online through Zoom. $40 suggested donation. Pre-registration is required as far in advance as possible.
