This retreat will introduce participants to one of the Christian West’s masterpiece works, and one of the most influential texts of Western civilization. Composed during the years 413–26, Saint Augustine wrote The City of God with both a pagan and Christian audience in mind. Dealing with the spiritual, political, and historical questions that arose in the wake of the unsettling Gothic invasions of the ancient city of Rome, the great bishop of Hippo lays out a vision of human history and politics that is as significant today as it was over 1,500 years ago. It continues to remain helpful in understanding the Christian’s relationship to earthly political power. Participants have the option to attend this program in person or online through Zoom. $40 suggested donation. Pre-registration is required as far in advance as possible.
