The idea of “nature” lies at the core of scientific inquiry, environmental policy and stewardship, philosophy, and theology. The meaning of the term, however, remains elusive. In this retreat we will examine the origins and etymology of this word, so that we might gain a deeper appreciation of its varied and sometimes conflicting meanings as it is used in different fields of inquiry. What do we mean when we speak of nature in the world around us, our own human nature, the two natures of Christ, and so forth? How are these uses of the term related, and how do they differ? How can we, as Christians, use of this word with more clarity and nuance as we engage contemporary issues ranging from environmental ethics, to religion, to gender theory, to human health and happiness?
